Skills for dance AND life

Updated: Nov 5, 2018

Hi there, I'm Cristina! I am a dance teacher/ dance studio owner & entrepreneur. I am by no means a doctor, and though I don't have children of my own, working with thousands of different children each year gives me a special type of insight to the needs, wants and behaviors of children..and people in general. I personally believe that many of the same tools that we need for success in dance, or any sport, will translate to success in life. My goal for this blog is to be something that parents and children can share together and get value from.

The skills below are how I lead my students, businesses and every aspect of my life. I wholeheartedly believe that applying these skills will set ANYONE up for success.

First, hard work! There ARE people who possess natural talent, and that's awesome...but many of the best dancers, athletes, business professionals I know were not natural talents. They worked their booties off to accomplish their goals, myself included. I was always among the better dancers at my studio and in high school and college but never the best. One of my favorite quotes is "hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard". For instance, one of the best quarterbacks of our time, Tom Brady, was selected with pick #199, a compensatory pick, in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft (wikipedia) and said he wasn't even the best on his high school team! It's not the only way to be successful, but you must possess an extremely strong work ethic to achieve your goals.

Second, integrity! Strong integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Some people will become successful by being shady, but I believe in karma and that it ALWAYS comes back around. Trust me, sleeping at night knowing that you are conducting yourself without stealing, lying or cheating is the best feeling and the plus is that by not being shady, you'll have so much extra time and energy to work onbecoming your best self.

Third, honesty! This goes along with integrity, but I'll add that it doesn't mean only doing the right also means sticking up for what's right even if you're standing alone. It means not sugar coating a serious matter if it needs to be addressed, no matter how hard it is...and I know it can be VERY hard. It also means admitting if you make a mistake which can also be hard, but we've all been there and no one is if you mess up, apologize and try not to make the same mistake again.

Lastly, perseverance! This is very, VERY important in success at school, any sport, business, etc. The ability to overcome obstacles and move on and not give up when the unthinkable happens. Just know that everyone has situations that they feel are "end of the world" and you don't know how you'll recover, yet here we all are. Just know whatever you are going WILL move on and you can overcome and become better. So many people get stuck when life gets tough (i've been there too), but nothing good has ever come from that. Believe in yourself, know that you WILL survive and learn from whatever experience has set you back.

Okay, i'm adding one more...I actually think it's the most important. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Think about it, if you don't believe in yourself who will? Well, maybe your family and the people you love but you have got to believe in yourself too to achieve anything worth while. If you feel strongly about something or have something you really want to achieve, chip away one block at a time and never, EVER give up. If you can dream it, you can do it!

I hope you got value from my first blog. I'll be posting once a week and can't wait to touch on more topics. If you have something you'd like me to share, please email me at
